WPS Student Named District 1 Winner in MML Essay Contest

Berlin, MD – Congratulations to Worcester Preparatory School’s (WPS) 4th Grade student Bianca Prosekova of Selbyville, DE who earned the title of the District 1 Essay Winner in the Maryland Municipal League's (MML) "If I Were Mayor, I Would…" 2024 Essay Contest.

Each year 4th grade students across the state enter into the “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” essay contest, and this year’s theme is “Inspiring Leadership in Your City/Town/Community.” Students were asked to write an essay about what they would do to inspire leadership in their city, town, or community and describe a project they would undertake to make others want to help make their city, town, or community better.

Bianca's essay focused on her belief that a good mayor needs to ensure the safety of the community. Among her ideas was to construct a pedestrian bridge across Route 113 and increase stoplights and stop signs. As Mayor, Bianca felt that to encourage leadership and participation it was best to listen to all citizens and make volunteering enjoyable. Bianca is in Mrs. Shimko’s 4th Grade class at WPS.

The MML "If I Were Mayor, I Would…" essay contest has educated over 50,000 students about municipal government and the role of the mayor, over its 24 years. The contest remains digital to ensure one of the longest-running programs is accessible to any classroom environment.
