Clubs and Organizations

The benefits of such involvement are substantial. The students learn interpersonal skills that help develop leadership, confidence, determination and responsibility.

The clubs and extracurricular activities offered vary each year depending on the interest of the students. Students may start a new club at the beginning of the school year by approaching Division Heads and finding a faculty sponsor. Click on any club below for a description.

Lower School

  • Chess Club

    The club welcomes beginners and more experienced chess players to the group. Each meeting will begin with information and an instructional time followed by chess playing time for all members. Parents are invited to attend the Chess Club meetings and help students with their chess games. Each year the Chess Club has a tournament at their last meeting and prizes are awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. The students participate in local and state competitions.
Lower School Clubs Period
On Friday afternoons Lower School Students have a Club Period. During this time they can participate in a club activity. Clubs include Pixel Art, Musical Mallards, Coding, Crafts and many others.


Middle School

  • Book Club

    During the spring, grades 6-8 may participate in a 3-month book club. Students read one Black Eyed Susan award winning book each month. Then during lunch, once a month, they meet and discuss.
  • Chess Club

  • Destination Imagination

    Both WPS teams (one competitive and one non-competitive) chose a project-based challenge and worked throughout the year to complete it. The competition team chose a challenge that involved writing a skit told from two different perspectives, based on a game.  The group chose Battleship, and not only created the skit, but also all the props, which included six replica Battleship boats.  One of the boats had a cannon capable of moving in two directions using hydraulic pumps created from simple plastic syringes, tubes and water.  The non-competition team chose a different project to work on that included creating a flying device that dropped payloads onto targets, as well as a group performance that incorporated the drops.  This team performed for parents and teachers on their final meeting. 
  • Math Club

    Students learn how to solve the Rubik's Cube, compete in the 24 Challenge or work together to solve various math puzzles. The goal is to increase interest in mathematics, to strengthen analytical thinking, and to have fun!
  • MathCounts

    MathCounts is a national program that provides students the opportunity to compete in live, in-person math contests against and alongside their peers. It is open to sixth-, seventh, and eighth-grade students. There are four levels of competition – school, chapter, state, and national.

    Students at each participating school work in the fall completing many different MathCounts problems. The problems are designed to increase in difficulty as the year progresses and cover a wide variety of problems, many that are not covered in regular math classes until the students reach Geometry, Algebra II, or even Pre-Calculus.

    In January, each school selects four students to be on the team and may send as many as 10 students to compete individually. The Chapter competition takes place in February. WPS is in the Annapolis chapter and is usually the only school on the Eastern Shore to participate in the competition. The top students from each chapter competition advance to their state competition, which takes place in March.
  • Vex Robotics

    Partnered with The Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute and Project Lead The Way (PLTW), Vex IQ Robotics is an ideal platform for exploring important STEM fundamentals and computer science concepts. Students from grades 6-8 engage in learning and applying fundamental physics and engineering concepts to build autonomous robots with a brain and then program them in ROBOTC Graphical language. They begin programming with simulated Virtual World Robots then move on to their real Vex IQ robots. The students make up a team that can participate in robotics competitions both locally and regionally.
  • Virtual Reality Club

    Worcester Prep's innovative Virtual Reality Club develops in-demand skill set for tech world.  
    Not only will club members experience what others built, they were challenged by their teacher to pursue programming their VR/AR environments for others, creating shared environments in which students can interact. Using the 360 degree camera and drone technology, the students can record and create 21st Century VR environments and avatars from real-time video and photography and code virtual experiences using Unity and C# software. The result is an immersive experience in what is certain to be an in-demand skill set in a technology-driven job market. 

Upper School

  • Chess Club

  • Creative Writing Club

    The purpose of the Creative Writing Club is to create a community where people feel free to express themselves through written word. Young authors come together to share, critique, and improve their work. They explore all forms of written expression, including poetry, short stories, script writing, and much more.
  • Environmental Club

    The mission of the Environmental Club is to help our school be “greener” by implementing environmental programs for the school. Last year the club built two greenhouses for the entire school’s use and will be working with getting materials needed for the greenhouse and programs for teachers who want to use the greenhouses in their curriculum.
  • Film Club

    The Film Club meets during an elective period but also convenes after school and on weekends to plan, film and edit films, talk about ideas and enter competitions.
  • Math Club

  • Math League

    Math League is a national competition designed to test the mathematical abilities of students at various ages. At the high school level students are given puzzle problems to solve individually. The advisor prepares, corrects and posts to the Maryland Math League web site. There is a series of six 30-minute tests, one per month. The Advanced Algebra II, Honors Pre-Calculus, as well as AP Calculus I and II classes participate. The top five scores are sent in as the schools score. At the academic awards program, the five students with the largest accumulated scores are recognized. WPS has won in their region in the state for the past 10 consecutive years.
  • Medical Explorers

    The mission of the Medical explorers club is to help students learn basic medical terminology and explore various jobs in the medical field. This Medical Explorers Club provides an opportunity for students interested in medicine to learn about many different aspects of medical professions including medical doctors, in a variety of specialties.  The club will also have guest speakers at the meetings and volunteer at local medical facilities.
  • Mock Trial

    Mock Trial is a competition open to all Maryland high schools where students are given a fictitious, but realistic case (either criminal or civil) which students are to prepare for trial. Mock Trial is sponsored by the Maryland State Bar Association and the CLREP (Citizen Law Related Education Program). Teams consist of 14 members: 6 attorneys, 6 witnesses, and 2 bailiffs. Practice begins in early November and competitions run from January through mid-March with regional and state championships running through mid-April. Team membership is by audition as the team size of 14 is sanctioned by the CLREP. The Mock Trial participate in five or more competition evenings each season.   • National Honor Society Academic Outreach

    The National Honor Society has a weekly academic outreach session on Thursdays for middle school and upper school students. Students from NHS work with students who need help in all subjects.
  • Newspaper (The Beaks Speaks)

    The staff of approximately 30 students is responsible for producing four, 12-page issues of the student newspaper (The Beak Speaks) each school year. Student reporters attend class weekly and are required to write at least one article. All students help with the layout, design, and photography. The newspaper highlights many of the student activities and clubs, classes, performances and athletics at Worcester Prep. In addition, students contribute their time beyond class to photograph musical performances, homecoming events, and sports games.
  • Radio Broadcasts

    WPS has several radio stations completely run by students who manage programming, advertising, D-Jing, and two websites. Students meet and do shows before and after school. The stations are broadcast worldwide and can be listened to on the websites, iTunes (Adult Contemporary-Audiograted) or the TuneIn App on phones and tablets.
  • Robotics Team (Botball Team)

    As a team, students in the Robotics club train their problem-solving skills while preparing for competitions or sharpen their robot building skills. A general robotics team consists of supporting, designing, building, programming, and driving teams. Because of the variety in the teams, the Robotics club encourages students who want to learn more about building robots with materials that are used in the Botball competitions.
  • Speakers for Students Club

    The goal of the club it is to bring in speakers for the school twice during each semester on issues that are of concern to students. We meet several times during each semester to discuss topics of concern and speaker selections.
  • Student Government Association

    The Student Government Association (S.G.A.) is comprised of four officers - president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer - who are elected by the high school student body. In addition to the officers there are approximately 12 S.G.A. representatives. The representative position is open to any student in the high school who wishes to participate. The S.G.A. is responsible for planning and organizing social and community service events throughout the school year. These include, but are not limited to, spirit week activities, the Homecoming Dance as well as the holiday food and donation drive.
  • Surf Club

    Worcester Prep is a coastal school with many surfers in it’s student body. Surfing provides a framework for athleticism and social interaction/cooperation as well as a respect and appreciation for nature. The WPS Surf Club will help student surfers progress their skills while promoting these ideals and school pride. The club will also promote respect for environment with community service such as beach clean up.
  • Tech Team

    Upper School & Middle School Tech Team members train for and participate in various online international Capture the Flag competitions throughout the year. Capture the Flag is a hacking competition aimed at deciphering and thwarting unknown threats and hacks . In preparation for the competitions, students are trained to perform cyber security tasks such as cracking codes, reverse engineering, creating design algorithms and mastering the Internet . Students learn skills in Java, Python, HTML and various other languages. Students meet after school for a few weeks before the competitions and the competitions are a week long and can be completed from home and during study halls until the final day when the team works together for an entire day at school. We have placed high and have won these competitions over the years in which we have competed.
  • Virtual Reality Club

  • Worcester Ambassadors

    The Worcester Ambassadors are students selected by the administration for duties related to school service.  Opportunities for service include: morning announcements, new student orientation, student aides, event ushers, event filming, mentoring, etc.
  • Worcester Volunteers

    The Worcester Volunteers is a student-run organization. Students can participate in any or all of the activities that the Volunteers have chosen to support. Currently, approximately two-thirds of the Upper School student body participates in at least one Volunteer-sponsored event. Assateague Beach Cleanup, Light the Night, the WPS recycling program, book drives for local residents and student-inspired activities are common events supported by the Volunteers. Each year different events are added depending on student and community interest.
  • Yearbook (The Mallard)

    The staff of approximately 50 students is responsible for all facets of creating the 200-page publication (The Mallard) which includes photography, design, advertising, marketing and editing. The yearbook captures the entire school year and includes all Worcester students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. The yearbook highlights many of the clubs, classes, performances and sports at Worcester Prep.
