WPS Students District 1 Semi-Finalists in “If I Were Mayor” Essay Contest

Berlin, MD – Congratulations to Worcester Preparatory School’s (WPS) 4th Grade students who placed as semi-finalists in the “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” essay contest sponsored by The Maryland Municipal League (MML).

This year over 1,300 essays were submitted to the MML “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” essay contest, and WPS 4th graders Tobi Blaska of Ocean City, MD and Grace Tunnell of Lewes, DE placed as semi-finalists in District 1 (Somerset, Worcester, Wicomico and Dorchester counties). These students are part of Mrs. Jankowski’s 4th Grade class at WPS.

Each year 4th grade students enter into the “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” essay contest, and this year’s theme is “Inspiring Leadership in Your City/Town/Community.” Students were asked to write an essay of no more than 275 words about what they would do to inspire leadership in their city, town, or community and describe a project they would undertake to make others want to help make their city, town, or community better. The essay contest has educated over 50,000 students about municipal government and the role of the mayor, over its 24 years. The contest remains digital to ensure one of our longest-running programs is accessible to any classroom environment.
