WPS WORX Field Trip to NASA Wallops Flight Facility

Berlin, MD – On Tuesday, February 25, a group of Upper School students traveled to NASA Wallops Flight Facility as a part of the Worcester Prep WORX program.

The newly created WORX program is designed to introduce students to the vast opportunities within our community and beyond. The program combines academic preparation with real-world observation to enhance students’ learning and create opportunities for career exposure. The WORX program features a speaker series, site visits to area businesses, and developing opportunities to shadow local professionals across various industries.

Last week, our students gained an in-depth understanding of the intricate process involved in launching a rocket into space and the extensive research that supports it. They discovered the various stages of rocket preparation, processing, and launch.

During their visit, students engaged with scientists and engineers who are diligently preparing experiments and vehicles for upcoming missions. They had the opportunity to observe the launch pads that have facilitated the delivery of supplies to the International Space Station (ISS) and those that deploy sounding rockets beyond the atmosphere for experimental purposes.

Additionally, students explored the historical significance of the center and its pivotal role in shaping America's space program. They learned how current launches are orchestrated and gained insight into the scientific programs actively underway today. This experience not only broadened their knowledge of aerospace engineering but also inspired them to consider future careers in the field.
