  • WPS Grade 3 Bread Sale AGH Donation

Berlin, MD – On Wednesday, March 5, Worcester Preparatory School (WPS) teachers Ms. Annie Seipp, and Mrs. Cynthia Phillips and their students presented members of the Atlantic General Hospital (AGH) Board of Trustees with a donation raised from the annual 3rd Grade Bread Sale.

The annual 3rd Grade Bread Sale is part of a hands-on learning lesson combining English, Science, Social Studies (civics and community), Mathematics, and Philanthropy. The project is modeled like a small business, with the young entrepreneurs baking bread, selling it to Lower School classmates in a “café”, and donating the proceeds to charity.

The project involved researching ingredients, creating posters, giving verbal presentations, and rotating jobs - from baker to cashier - to learn all the facets of running a business.  The class partnered with Bad Monkey in West Ocean City, where they learned how to make and bake the bread. At the end of the Bread Sale, the students counted the money they raised ($431.78) and donated the proceeds to AGH.

  • WPS WORX Field Trip to NASA Wallops Flight Facility

Berlin, MD – On Tuesday, February 25, a group of Upper School students traveled to NASA Wallops Flight Facility as a part of the Worcester Prep WORX program.

The newly created WORX program is designed to introduce students to the vast opportunities within our community and beyond. The program combines academic preparation with real-world observation to enhance students’ learning and create opportunities for career exposure.  The WORX program features a speaker series, site visits to area businesses, and developing opportunities to shadow local professionals across various industries.

Last week, our students gained an in-depth understanding of the intricate process involved in launching a rocket into space and the extensive research that supports it. They discovered the various stages of rocket preparation, processing, and launch.

During their visit, students engaged with scientists and engineers who are diligently preparing experiments and vehicles for upcoming missions. They had the opportunity to observe the launch pads that have facilitated the delivery of supplies to the International Space Station (ISS) and those that deploy sounding rockets beyond the atmosphere for experimental purposes.

Additionally, students explored the historical significance of the center and its pivotal role in shaping America's space program. They learned how current launches are orchestrated and gained insight into the scientific programs actively underway today. This experience not only broadened their knowledge of aerospace engineering but also inspired them to consider future careers in the field.

Special thanks NASA Wallops Flight Facility and the entire team for hosting these WPS students!

  • WPS Junior Partners with RecycleBalls to Promote Tennis Ball Recycling

Berlin, MD – As the tennis season approaches, Worcester Preparatory School junior Catherine Cullen is teaming up with RecycleBalls to help prevent tennis balls from ending up in landfills.

RecycleBalls is a non-profit organization dedicated to reusing and recycling as many tennis balls as possible across the United States. Millions of used tennis balls contribute to landfill waste, and the materials they are made from can take approximately 400 years to decompose.

Catherine learned about RecycleBalls through a family member acquainted with the organization's founders. She discovered that they were seeking assistance in promoting their initiative in various regions.

“I enjoy playing tennis and am very concerned about this environmental issue, which is why I want to get involved,” Catherine stated. “Many student ambassadors have participated in this program, and being one in this area would greatly support this cause and benefit our environment.”

With Berlin located near numerous tennis courts and resort towns, Catherine hopes to collect a significant number of used tennis balls. Once the minimum of 100 or more tennis balls are gathered, they will be shipped to RecycleBalls in Vermont. There, these tennis balls will be repurposed into products such as horse footing, Green Gold (ground-up recycled balls used in tennis courts), and dog balls. The organization is also exploring additional ideas for repurposing, including t-shirts and shoes.

Tennis ball recycling containers are in Worcester Prep’s Athletic and Performing Arts Center. Donations will be collected throughout the tennis season this spring.

For more information on RecycleBalls, visit their website at www.recycleballs.org.
